Let's Make it Real

Come together, right now, over ME.
(COme Together, The Beatles)

Social media gives us a reach to new friends and around the world we never had quite that way before. Yet, in a way we have come full circle. In the really olden days people had much more intensive connections. The small villages, the communities, even the pubs of the olden days. People hung out with each other. It is the disease of the modern day city life that broke these close ties.

Social media for us spiritual folks is like sugar, I would argue. We share with each other positive messages that we know are true. We "like" them, and the author "likes our likes". Yet, we are interacting on an artificial level. Posting notes and commenting on it is less personal than texting each other, while texting can't compare with a simple chat on the phone, FaceTime or Skype, and everything virtual pales in comparison to the pleasure of meeting each other in person.

I have made a New Year's Resolution to step away from Social Media a little. Spirituality happens in real life. That's where the rubber meets the road. That's where we learn the uplifting insights that we later share in our virtual communities. A perk of my otherwise stressful job is that I have the ability to travel. So my second New Year's Resolution is to connect with my spiritual friends for real whenever the opportunity arises. Let's make lasting connections. Let's make it real!
