If you have attachments ...

If you have attachment to this life,
you are not a religious person (dharma practitioner).

If you have attachment to the world of existence,
you do not have renunciation.

If you have attachment to your own purpose,
you do not have enlightenment mind (bodhichitta).

If grasping arises, you do not have the view.

~ Sachen Kunga Nyingpo (1092–1158),
Root verses of Parting from the Four Attachments

I read these wise words on a cold, energy-heavy full moon night when it was raining cats and dogs in New England. True as these insights were, I was tempted to add the missing fourth attachment:

If you have attachment to your own wise words,
you also don’t get anywhere!
