Sometimes we have to get our hands dirty to find purity

Why is ethical living so important for a spiritual break-through? Ethical, not in a universal sense but in a way meaningful to you. You may be a vegan; I may be a vegetarian; you may be abstinent from sex while I may enjoy it. No, ethical in the sense that there are no inner conflicts whatsoever.

Every inner conflict dissipates energy, and it is a hallmark of spiritual break-through to release enormous amounts of energy. When inner conflicts remain, this energy has no functioning host to absorb it. Every insight into the root cause of inner conflicts is an insight into our self-identification.

It’s subtle though. I remember the channeled voice of Seth claiming that swearing need not be a handicap in this spiritual quest. Alcohol may be the wake-up call into the nature of our self-denial. Coffee may get us through the depth of the depression. You soul-search values until the “you” ceases.

Ramana Maharshi declared that “No one succeeds without effort. Those who succeed owe their success to perseverance.” We all end up pure, compassionate, sensitive, loving, but the road towards that state is by finding out who we think we are until our essence shines through.

So, if you spot an inconsistency in you, please look again. Not being perfect just means that there is a learning opportunity at hand. Either your notion of perfection is wrong, or you still have to dig up the root cause of this part of you that resists doing what you know is right. Keep digging.

Sometimes we have to get our hands dirty in order to find purity.
