I went jogging after a 5-year hiatus. Wow, it was bad! I walked more than I ran, but it was a first step in a good direction. I was an athlete when I was young and had been living off this luxury for way too long. This year a shoulder injury reminded it me to take better care of my body when returning to my gym routine proved to be quite hard.
I was reminded of the folks who go from being overweight to becoming a gym rat, or the workaholics who look down on the lazy but secretly fear unemployment or retirement because they know that it is their work and work ethics that give them their raison d’etre. It’s self improvement from one perspective, but just postponement of inner work from another.
Non-duality teaches that we cannot improve an illusionary entity. Anyone who follows my writing knows that I am a big believer of doing both, help removing self-inflicted obstacles for the seekers, while reminding them that the seeker is illusionary. When we hear a voice in our head or get a good advice from a friend it behoves to look for the wisdom, just as it is possible to be choice-less awareness as we go about our daily tasks.
Not sure whether it’s choice-less awareness or self improvement that calls for action, but I will hit the trail again tomorrow.
