What Spiritual Type Are You?

The magic works through you. Not beside you. Not around you. Not for you. Through you. Choose your stage, do your dance, stake your claim.
The Universe (tut.com)

I am a spiritual traveler and always thought the journey towards God means that we are on a mission that simply washes away all of our personality traits until all that remains is divine bliss. Today I would call this perspective somewhat naive and a bit misleading. A spiritual journey is a transition to a new personality structure. We all have our different spiritual role to play based on our intrinsic character traits. Some raise other spiritual giants in families; others influence the directions of organizations, politics and countries. Some are teachers, social workers, friends, artists and script writers. We build a network of spiritual connections that shape the evolution of (wo)mankind. And while we all may intuitively understand where the other comes from, we will still be quite different, even as spiritual travelers.

Just like the story of the elephant and the three blind men; I say that I hold onto something flexible as a snake (trunk), whereas you say that you feel something as big as a tree trunk (foot) whereas a third feels a spear (tusk). We define the elephant in the aggregate but only by sticking to our unique spiritual type.

Steven Reiss in "Who Am I?" contrasted some 16 character dimensions that supposedly define us; I shrunk his list down to 12. Have a look and tell me how you fit into this 12-dimensional scale. How have particular attributes changed since you started your spiritual path?

Power: the desire to control or to influence others
Independence: the desire to be self-reliant
Curiosity: the desire for knowledge
Acceptance: the desire to be accepted by others
Order: the desire for organization
Saving: the desire to put something aside for the future
Honor: the feeling of loyalty towards an ideal
Social: the desire to be connected to others
Family: the ties to parents, children, and other relatives
Status: the desire for social standing
Romance: the importance of sex and soul connection
Tranquility: the desire for emotional calmness

When I reflect on my path I feel that my current area of influence has been put in place for me decades ago. It was a Force beyond my consciousness that set me up for this mission. I accept this path, but today I am working hard on crafting my next area of influence; that of a writer and a spiritual coach. Value your heritage and your history but don't feel shy either to lay the foundation for your next area of influence. We already had the Buddha, Christ and Lao-Tzu, we now need you to show up. Find your corner of influence - the Universe exists just for you to express yourself.

The Power of Intentions

There is no miracle you cannot do if you desire healing.
A Course in Miracles

Did it ever occur to you that your attitude towards people and a situation determines how they will interact with you? Say you are visiting a new country and already at the immigration office you discover hostility. Perhaps the immigration officer had a bad day, but it affects you, unconsciously bad vibrations start building inside of you and hardly have you reached the hotel that you are bound to pick a fight with the hotel staff and your partner.

Every place has an energy field and every encounter with others creates one. It turns out that your attitude towards that encounter matters a lot. You can be a polluter of this space, your bad vibrations can literally pull others down with it, or you can be a healer. A Japanese scientist ran an experiment when he took pictures of water as he played different music and consciously displayed different emotions. Believe it not, but these water pictures reflected the scientist's attitudes right back and it turns out that the water picture taken when the scientist experienced love was by far the most beautiful.

You may then ask what to do with this observation. Well, from now on visualize your intent of a place or a meeting beforehand and just see what happens. Yes, you can be a healer of a situation but you also have to learn how to detox yourself when you have been exposed to a polluted environment. You can be a healer, you can be a bearer of light. The magic is to discover that your environment interacts with you. The Universe just mirrors your own intentions back to you. When you wholly desire healing, love will be wherever you are.

The Yin and Yang of the Tao

The symbol of Tai Chi puts the harmonious coexistence of male and female - yin and yang - so powerfully and simply as the interaction of black and white in a circle. This interaction creates wholeness, represented by the circle, and inside the black half there is a little white circle just as inside the white half there is a little black circle.

That is how we are. No matter how feminine or masculine you are, you will always have an area in your life where the opposite energy rules. Some may suppress it, but it is still there. You have been created by the union of yin and yang, you have both your parents in you, just as they were the product of their parents. So inside you, there are these two different energies running.

You might be a man, the embodiment of yang energy; so you extend your energy, you are assertive and are out to conquer, while yin takes energy in, is more passive and inclusive. Surely, there are girls and women who are dominated by male energy, just as there are boys and men who are dominated by female energy, which explains homosexuality. The principle is the same though, male and female energy unite to find wholeness.

The union between yin and yang brings balance. We are all out to find our right partner - the complementary energy that makes us whole. If you live by yourself you must realize that something is missing. So, most of us anyway, are drawn to the opposite sex to become whole, stable and balanced. Just as the Tao stabilizes and harmonizes the energies in the Universe, so in the way, you aim to replicate this feat in your family life. As above, so below, as they say.

Apparently, we can not just simply go out and have sex to achieve this balance and harmony. Sex gives you a temporary high, it allows you to play out the yin and yang dance in the physical exchange. Who lies on top and who is below, who is giving and who is receiving, who is screaming how and when - all these acts are psychological expressions of yin and yang. Yet, as you return to your home after the physical union, your satisfaction soon vanishes. You need to live with your complementary energy field if you aspire to experience wholeness, hard though this sometimes seems to be.

Yin and yang also represent the opposite side of physical world. Actually, they are the polar ends of a complete spectrum. The union is one, that is what the Universe is as well. All energy forces work that way. High energy meet low energy, exuberance meets depression, day meets night and birth meets death. We often want the one and not the other, but we have to wholeheartedly embrace both if we like to be happy. It is all a cycle of energy. When your energy is low, take a rest, just as you sleep at night to be ready for the sunny next morning.

The black circle in the white half and white circle in the black half indicates the dynamic nature of Tao. It is always changing and moving. When you feel happy, the seed of sadness is already on the way to sprout. Because it is still beneath the surface so you can not sense it yet, but it is already on its way. It is the same when you are sad, the seed of happiness is on the way too. Observe it in yourself, it is possible to see if you are sensitive enough.

Tai Chi studies and expresses these energy moves. Let everything in your life flow as effortlessly; accept every move without resistance and get completely lost in it. There is never any control, never any anticipation, just movement along the harmonious flow. The mind is not involved at all, and the emotions flow in tandem with the Tao. Embrace the Tao, embrace life's energy - lead a life of balance and harmony by effortlessly merging your energies with others along the Tao. When you dance to the Tao's tune you can go beyond the duality of life and taste oneness for yourself. Enjoy!
